How to Stop Wasting Time on Dating Apps & Find Healthy Love with Dr. Jennie Young
Have you ever felt like dating apps are an endless sea of people who just aren't right for you? Or found yourself giving someone chance after chance, only to realize the incompatibility was there from the beginning?
In this episode of the Smart Dating Academy Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Jennie Young, professor of rhetoric and women's and gender studies and creator of the Burned Haystack Dating Method. We talk about how to stop wasting time on dating apps, recognize red flags, and become more intentional about finding a healthy, lasting relationship.
After returning to dating around age 50, Jennie began noticing patterns in the language, photos, and messages she encountered on dating apps. Her research and personal experience led her to develop a method for filtering potential matches more effectively.
Her central idea? Dating is a process of elimination. Rather than trying to appeal to everyone or going on endless dates because dating is a numbers game, you can learn to recognize incompatibilities earlier and focus on people who align with your values.
Whether you're dating after divorce, dating in midlife, or trying to find love again, this conversation offers practical ways to approach online dating with more clarity and confidence.
What Is the Burned Haystack Dating Method?
Jennie's philosophy starts with a simple idea: dating is a process of elimination, which dovetails exactly with the Smart Dating Academy® system.
Jennie became frustrated by the conventional advice that told women to go on as many dates as possible because dating is a numbers game, while simultaneously encouraging women to make themselves as appealing as possible to as many people as possible.
You don't want everyone to like you - you're looking for people that align with your politics and values.
You can use the underlying principle to become picky about the right things which is the Smart Dating Academy approach.
As I say, be picky about values, character, and the qualities that actually matter in a long-term partner.
We discuss:
Dating app red flags: Jennie's 33 rhetorical patterns and what language can reveal about a potential match.
Compatibility and values: Why you don't need everyone to like you, only the people who are right for you.
The power of questions: How asking thoughtful questions can reveal someone's worldview without telling them what you want to hear.
Assuming positive intent: Why Jennie takes a different approach to interpreting behavior on dating apps.
Video dates and boundaries: Why I recommend a short video date before investing hours in an in-person meeting, and how someone's response to your boundaries can offer valuable information.
Emotional regulation: Why observing how someone handles frustration can tell you a lot about their potential as a partner.
You Don't Need Instant Chemistry to Find Love
One of my favorite parts of this conversation is Jennie's own love story. Jennie actually used the Burned Haystack Method to find her own partner. She met him on Hinge in July 2025. One of her dating profile questions asked what special skill someone would bring to the table if AI caused an apocalypse. The question was intentionally designed to reveal people who would turn anything into something sexual. And she got plenty of those responses.
Then her future partner answered: Algebra. He was a middle school math teacher, and his answer was funny, self-deprecating, smart, and completely non-sexual. That answer gave Jennie a reason to keep talking.
But she wasn't looking for fireworks. She wasn't looking for a profile that gave her chills. She wasn't looking for fireworks She was looking for someone who seemed like a nice person she could respect and enjoy being around. And over time, that connection grew.
We also discuss why you don't have to feel optimistic about dating every day. Sometimes, committing to a thoughtful process and honoring your standards is enough to keep moving forward.
Key Takeaways
Look for compatibility instead of trying to appeal to everyone.
Pay attention to patterns in dating profiles and early conversations.
Ask questions that reveal values and how someone thinks.
Use video dates to protect your time and emotional energy.
Notice how a potential partner responds to boundaries and everyday frustrations.
Stay open to attraction that grows over time, rather than expecting instant fireworks.
If you're ready to date smarter, recognize healthy relationship potential, and stop spending time on people who aren't right for you, I hope this conversation helps you approach dating with a fresh perspective.
